To the Editor.
—We would like to express our gratitude to Michaels and Levine1 for documenting the problem of AIDS orphans in the United States. As service providers to HIV-infected parents, we are also pleased with the editorial comments2 on the need for action at the state and local level.
Two years ago the Family AIDS Advocacy Task Force of the Families' and Children's AIDS Network convened to address this problem in Chicago. As a result, the Second Family Program of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois was recently implemented to facilitate permanency planning for HIV-affected families. The program will reduce the potential burden on the state child welfare system by recruiting adoptive parents or intervening with extended family members who might be appropriate parents or guardians. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services supports our efforts and has taken part in program development.
