To the Editor.
—Your recent reports on the proposed redirection of tobacco tax revenues from prevention to medical treatment in California1,2 were both incorrect and misleading, and did a grave disservice to those of us who are struggling to balance the competing public health goals of prevention and medical care in the midst of a disastrous budget situation. The factual irregularities contained in the article are serious, but too numerous to address here. Instead, I would like to address the broader policy issue raised in these articles and comment on your report of the California Senate hearings on my confirmation as director of the Department of Health Services (DHS).
