—Dr Wolter questions whether our analysis of serosurvey data from newborns yielded an unbiased estimate of HIV prevalence among black women of childbearing age in Washington, DC.1 He suggests a potential downward bias. In studies of Dundee, Scotland,2 and the Paris, France, area,3 HIV prevalence among all pregnant women, including those who had abortions as well as those who carried their pregnancies to term, was at least 40% higher than among the subset of women having live births.
Previously we reported that HIV prevalence among childbearing women was 0.10% among whites, 0.47% among Hispanics, and 1.8% among blacks.1 To assess the potential impact of abortion in the District of Columbia, we analyzed HIV prevalence data from District of Columbia women who attended two privately funded abortion clinics.
