To the Editor.
—Dr Saltman1 gives a curve-ball "pitch" for single-source financing of health care as "a solution for the United States." Even his "diasadvantages" reflect his strong bias ("requires political will to act boldly" and the like). I submit that any single-source financed and administered system of health care is doomed to disaster whether it is private or public. The strength of America is in its competition and choice of alternatives.
Most important are issues of equality and freedom. While most of us would agree that there should be equality for basic health care services and that there must be a system to provide this to all individuals, we should not allow this quest for equality to destroy the freedom to have extra services for those who wish to provide or purchase them.
