To the Editor.
—Selwyn et al1 report important information for the prevention of tuberculosis in addicts infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We would like to make the following comments based on our experience at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Methadone Maintenance Clinic at Bronx (NY) Municipal Hospital Center, which was established 26 years ago specifically for the treatment of addicts with tuberculosis.
In 1985, we reported that 27% of our patients were positive for purified protein derivative (PPD) and 9% were anergic.2 In 1989, again 97 (27%) of 355 patients who were tested were PPD-positive. Of these 97 patients, 20 (20%) had a history of treated tuberculosis. Of the remaining 77 PPD-positive patients, 61 (80%) had received preventive isoniazid treatment.
