—We agree with Mohr et al that the analyses of PIOPED that we have published evaluate the contribution of patient characteristics that are suggestive of the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism rather than the risk factors for pulmonary embolism. We think this article makes an important contribution to the literature by presenting information on men and women in relation to pulmonary emboli. We also agree that both prospective and case-control studies with a population base will be necessary to clearly define the role of risk factors for pulmonary embolism in women and men.
We disagree that misconceptions are likely to result from our publication, because the PIOPED investigators have written as clearly as possible in this publication and another1 that the PIOPED analyses address the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism among patients initially who are suspected of having pulmonary embolism on the basis of characteristics widely believed to be
