—Janssen Pharmaceutica regrets any confusion regarding the Hismanal (astemizole)-Nizoral (ketoconazole) pen.
We took steps to curb the use of the pen in July 1992. The use of it that Drs Gelfand and Lancaster saw was inadvertent, and we are taking further action to see that the pens are no longer used.
We are pleased to note that the Janssen representative did point out the potential for drug interactions to the physicians at the hospital display. This is in line with our standards for appropriately disseminating accurate information to health care providers. Nevertheless, we agree that, by itself, the pen could convey an inappropriate message.
We regret the incident and thank Drs Gelfand and Lancaster for bringing it to our attention.
