To the Editor.

—I was excited to read the article by Pastuszak et al¹ reporting on a prospective study of 128 women who took therapeutic doses of fluoxetine during their first trimester of pregnancy compared with the pregnancy outcome of two matched groups of women exposed to either nonteratogens or tricyclic antidepressants. Rates of major congenital malformations were similar for the three groups.

This prospective study follows close on the heels of two studies reported in Lancet in 1992. Jacobson et al² reported in a prospective study the pregnancy outcome after lithium exposure during the first trimester of pregnancy, and Bergman et al³ published the results of a study of exposure to benzodiazepines during fetal life using a retrospective approach.
