—Dr Boland suggests use of the Mini-Mental State Examination to follow up patients in the hospital. I agree that issues related to mental status and recovery from critical illness may be important, but we did not study them. They need to be evaluated in future studies. Dr Woolley addresses issues of power of discrimination in the interpretation of a negative study. We agree that negative conclusions regarding differences in outcome require larger numbers than those to document differences. Meta-analysis of data from several studies will have to be performed, once other studies have been published, to establish our point.
