To the Editor.
—I admire Dr Johns1 for his idealism. To that extent, I believe that Johns, and all who are idealistic, should volunteer for national health service. However, I dispute his contention that this is something that only physicians should do uniquely in our society.
I have always been in favor of national service in place of military service. This would affect all individuals, male and female, and would affect all levels of society. People would be drafted into national service for periods of up to 3 years. There would be less service required for those volunteering for the military or for dangerous assignments. All others would be able to serve at lower levels in the government, freeing up needed government funds to pay those with experience and to retain people.
