Breast-feeding: Time to Teach What We Preach

To the Editor.

—Dr Freed's recent article on breast-feeding1 brings attention to a long-neglected resource needed to assist in reaching the Healthy People 20002 goals for promotion of breast-feeding.

However, we regret there is an error in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program costs for infants and breast-feeding women provided in the article. The actual yearly cost to the North Carolina WIC program for bottle-feeding infants is $932 (cost of infant food package and non— breast-feeding postpartum food package). This is more than twice the cost of $396 to WIC for breast-feeding women (cost of breast-feeding food package).

The critical issue to be emphasized is that there are still significant cost savings to the WIC program, and thus the taxpayer, for every woman who breast-feeds an infant. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
