To the Editor.

—Regarding the article by Brewer et al,¹ in Zimbabwe, where I worked for 3 years, most of the local people treated their furuncular myiasis by covering the lesion with a cloth thickly smeared with "mafuta" (a skin ointment made from chicken fat); within 6 to 12 hours, the larvae would migrate to the surface and could be removed easily.

The Africans, like the South Americans, claimed the larvae came out in order to eat the mafuta.

For vegetarians or for more effete sufferers of this painful affliction, I found an occlusive Vaseline dressing works just fine. . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
