To the Editor.

—In support of the laudable conclusion favoring a program of varicella vaccination,¹ I would like to point out an area in which Dr Lieu and coauthors may have underestimated the benefits: untoward outcome of pregnancy complicated by chickenpox. A significant proportion of exposed fetuses are either stillborn or severely and permanently handicapped.
