—We recently published an updated meta-analysis of the effect of estrogen use on risk of breast cancer.1 In case-control studies with community controls in which only the effect of conjugated equine estrogens was analyzed, risk of breast cancer after 10 years of estrogen increased significantly (at least 15% to 29%).
We then updated the meta-analysis in which we stratified by factors such as family history of breast cancer. When we added three new studies2-4 to our original analysis,5 we found no significant difference in risk between women who had a family history of breast cancer and those who did not. Among estrogen users, the RR was 1.57 (95% CI, 1.14 to 2.15) for women with a family history of breast cancer, and the RR was 1.26 (95% CI, 1.11 to 1.47) for women with no family history.
