To the Editor.
—The article by Dr Peterson and colleagues1 finds that despite racial differences in the use of major coronary procedures, there was no significant difference in adjusted mortality by race and class.
While I accept the point that quality of life as well as mortality needs to be taken into account,2 another point needs careful consideration: namely, that we may be spending billions of dollars on coronary procedures for very little benefit. Perhaps this money could be better spent elsewhere on more cost-effective health measures.
