To the Editor.
—I read the Commentary by Adler et al,1 and I could not believe that JAMA would ever print such gungrabbing nonsense. The Second Amendment was placed in the Constitution for a purpose, to prevent tyranny. The individual right to keep and bear arms, with the people as the militia, was designed to keep this country free.
To advise some socialist scheme to deprive the people of their arms is not wise. Yes, there is a cost in lives for our Second Amendment freedoms, but there is a cost for all our freedoms. We need to be free to defend ourselves and our country. Instead of speaking of banning firearms, we should be planning education about firearms. When we speak about AIDS, we plan education, we do not ban sex and needles.
