—The 30-week study of tacrine hydrochloride by Dr Knapp and colleagues¹ was the most edifying report yet published on this new treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Urinary incontinence is a major reason for institutionalization of patients with Alzheimer's disease. We were unable to find any assessment of the effect of tacrine on incontinence in the published article. However, the authors state that a clinician did "develop a comprehensive impression of... behaviors and activities of daily living."^1(p986) Since the latter include toileting, we wonder if more specific information is available on changes in continence during treatment with tacrine. . . .
