To the Editor.

—The reading of the two articles on tacrine in Alzheimer's disease^1,2 left me with a bitter aftertaste.

To me, it demonstrated a decline of the ethical standards of the American Medical Association, or at least of JAMA. The principal authors of the articles are employees of the pharmaceutical establishment producing tacrine, and it is quite obvious that the article is a promotion of their product, the value of which is far from being established.

I am not a neurologist, a psychiatrist, or a biochemist, and I do not pretend to have any qualifications to evaluate the articles scientifically. However, I have cared for a wife with Alzheimer's disease for many years, and I have experienced personally the horror of this dreadful disease.
