To the Editor.

—Dr Wechsler and colleagues¹ have made an important contribution to the field in their recent publication examining alcohol use among college undergraduates. Their discussion of secondary binge effects—akin to secondhand smoking—adds a novel and interesting dimension to the dialogue. Further, the identification of gender-specific operational definitions of binge drinking provides a new way of looking at data on college women. However, the assertion that this is the first representative national study of collegiate drinking is an overstatement.

There are two active and preexisting national databases: the Core Alcohol and Drug Survey² managed by the Core Institute at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and the Monitoring the Future Project³ administered by the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
