To the Editor.

—I read with great interest the article by Dr Willcox and colleagues.¹ It identified some very troublesome issues with regard to prescribing medication for elderly patients and concludes that "much more vigorous physician education and increased pharmaceutical regulation are needed to improve the safety of prescribing." While this may be true, there are two issues that I feel are integral to solving the problem at hand in a more timely and efficient manner.

First, the primary focus of the article appeared to be on the physician and his or her responsibility in this process. There is another health professional that should assume some of the responsibilities for this problem, yet is also the most qualified to begin correcting the situation now and address the information needs of the community: your pharmacist.
