To the Editor.
—I eagerly read the article by Dr Rimm and colleagues1 in which the authors concluded that "fiber, independent of fat intake, is an important dietary component for the prevention of coronary disease." These important findings will probably lead to behavioral changes both in the population and in physicians' dietary prescriptions. The food industry also will be urged to develop products to increase fiber intake and to provide product labeling that addresses the fiber content in a more detailed way.
However, there is another issue that should be considered and that Rimm and colleagues acknowledge: "We cannot conclusively exclude the possibility that some unknown factor associated with high fiber intake is responsible for the reduction in coronary disease.
