To the Editor.
—In the Addiction Medicine section of the Contempo issue,1I was surprised to find no mention of what is surely major news in the drug dependence field: the recent availability of nonprescription nicotine replacement agents. Nicotine replacement has been found to be an important modality in treating dependence on nicotine,2 the drug responsible for the overwhelming preponderance of mortality from drug use. Addiction specialists are increasingly recognizing the benefit of including nicotine addiction treatment in their work,3 but this was not reflected in the article by Drs Wesson and Ling.
