To the Editor.
—Drs Hatsukami and Fischman1 wrote a most interesting article. Their conclusion, however, is to be debated. They state that "those addicted individuals who are incarcerated for the sale or possession of cocaine are better served by treatment than prison." This is very likely true, but society is better served by getting these individuals out of a circumstance in which they might continue to sell these drugs. Society and the individuals would best be served by having the addicted individuals treated in prison.
