State Contracts for Enforcement of FDA Tobacco Regulations:

The FDA is contracting with states throughout the country to help enforce requirements of the new tobacco regulation to protect children and adolescents. The first 4 contracts were awarded to Florida, Washington, Illinois, and Texas. Under the terms of the contracts, each state will conduct approximately 300 compliance checks per month. Adolescents aged 15 and 16 years in typical dress, accompanied by an adult, will attempt to purchase cigarettes or "spit tobacco" in retail stores in each state. Retailers found selling to anyone younger than 18 years the first time will receive a notice of violation informing them of the violation and stating that another compliance check may be conducted.
