To the Editor.— Our recent article in The Journal (240:1255, 1978) on current advances in the development of less hazardous cigarettes resulted in scores of letters to us from physicians, scientists, and other concerned citizens. Two such letters, addressing the extremely important issues of the inhalation practices of smokers and of additives used in the manufacture of commercial brand cigarettes, are to be published in The Journal, with our comments. We would like to take the opportunity here to clarify additional issues that were raised during the ensuing mass media coverage of our findings. It should be emphasized at the outset, however, that our article was intended to be evaluated on its merits by the readers of The Journal and was not intended for general mass media distribution.
