To the Editor. —In support of the laudable conclusion favoring a program of varicella vaccination,1 I would like to point out an area in which Dr Lieu and coauthors may have underestimated the benefits: untoward outcome of pregnancy complicated by chickenpox. A significant proportion of exposed fetuses are either stillborn or severely and permanently handicapped. One such case was reported recently from this region.2 Varicella pneumonia also may be fatal to the pregnant woman.3
