This is the third book based on data from the 1992 National Health and Social Life Survey (NHSL) of sexual behavior in the United States. The first two books, The Social Organization of Sexuality and Sex in America, shared essentially the same material and were published simultaneously but were geared toward different audiences. Both books received widespread attention in the media as well as praise from professionals. Two of the four authors of the first two books, Edward O. Laumann and Robert T. Michael, edited this volume. They also coauthored most of the chapters with the help of other researchers and graduate students.
