To the Editor: Dr Weinberger and colleagues1 found that a pharmacy-based education program for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) produced mixed results. Although patients in the education program had improved peak expiratory flow rates (PEFRs), they also had more emergency department (ED) visits. Furthermore, many pharmacists did not use the program consistently.
I am concerned about the narrow scope of the study, which involved 36 chain pharmacies in a single city. A chain pharmacy in a major city offers a very different service than does an independent community pharmacy in a neighborhood in which the services are personal and built on a relationship of long-term trust.
