Depressive illness is of immense importance throughout clinical medicine. It complicates many illnesses, mimics others, and is a prevalent, serious disease in its own right. Not only is major depression the fourth leading cause of lost days of healthy functioning throughout the entire world, it is the leading cause of medical morbidity when death is excluded as a morbid consequence. Thus, it is vital that the medical community be well versed in the most current scientific knowledge concerning this scourge. To that end, I have encountered no more comprehensive, readable, and up-to-date single volume than The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders.
