To the Editor: The study of women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation by Ms Finch and colleagues1 found that for cancer, the adjusted relative risk reduction associated with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was 80% (95% confidence interval, 42%-93%). While this is valuable information for advising women at risk, no mention was made of morbidity or mortality secondary to this surgery.
In counseling patients about potential risks vs benefits, these are important outcomes that were not addressed in this study. I would be particularly interested in morbidity and mortality data in the group of women who underwent surgery who were found not to have cancer.
