The first component of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE Step 1) tests medical students on “basic science content according to general principles and individual organ systems.”1 First Aid for the USMLE STEP 1 2007: A Student to Student Guide is designed to help medical students “make the most of their limited time, money, and energy” and covers topics ranging from examination registration to a mnemonic for the causes of hypercalcemia. It succeeds in efficiently compiling a great deal of information, but organizational issues prevent it from maximizing its usefulness as a resource for comprehensive and rapid review.
