Thanks to Gordon Parker, his colleagues at the Black Dog Institute, and Cambridge University Press, readers have a new volume devoted exclusively to what is at once a highly prevalent and seriously understudied disorder. Bipolar II disorder, defined by the presence of depressive and hypomanic (but not manic) episodes over the life course, is probably at least twice as common as the classic bipolar I disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness. Yet little systematic study has been done of bipolar II disorder, and little has been written about it. To our knowledge, Parker's is only the third book in the English-language literature devoted to this topic.

Parker takes a clinically relevant approach to filling this gap. He first reviews the salient but limited data on the disorder and approaches to its treatment. He then provides his own views on its management. He also asks an international group of experts in …
