Many physicians likely know of Paul Farmer through Tracy Kidder's 2003 biography, Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World (Random House). That book has deservedly become a common read in colleges and medical schools across the nation. It documents Farmer's extensive work in rural Haiti and his efforts as founding director of Partners in Health, a nongovernmental organization with influence now well beyond the Caribbean, providing innovative health care services in Russia, Central and South America, and Africa, as well as Boston, Farmer's home. It diligently describes Farmer's substantial work ethic, his dedication to patients, and his passion for bringing up-to-date medical care to the poor and vulnerable.
